Today marks the beginning of United States Silver League's free agent filing period. With it comes the uncertainty of an offseason filled with the potential for blockbuster signings, off-the-wall trades and a mad scramble to improve your club before you get left out in the cold.
General managers have the entire offseason in which to sign free agents. The biggest names on this year's market include:
Ed Hopkins, 29 year-old 3B
Chip Bishop, 29 year-old RH SP
Lawrence Washington, 29 year-old SS
Carlos Ortega, 30 year-old 1B
Chandler Bailey, 28 year-old C
Pancho García, 35 year-old RF
Júlio Maldonado, 33 year-old RF
Enrique Pérez, 32 year-old C
Pablo Trujillo, 31 year-old RF
Alan Elder, 28 year-old LF

SL News: Draft Pool Revealed

For the entrants in this year's rookie draft, released today by the league, the possibilities are endless. Some will immediately seize their opportunity to play in the bigs with a venom, doggedly working their way up through the system to arrive on the pro circuit in three to five years, if they are lucky. Others will struggle, have their hopes dashed, reborn and dashed again, all the while not fully giving up on the dream. Still others will take each day as it comes, while not losing sight of the end-game. They will figure it out, quietly work their way into the professional ranks and have solid, if not spectacular careers in United States Silver League. At any rate, teams now can scout the draft pool for the next 30 days.
The Transactions page also gets a new section dedicated to the pool and will be available for 65 days prior to draft day.
The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Mark Wright, 18 year-old CF out of high-school.
2. Richard Murdoch, 23 year-old RF out of college.
3. John Rhodes, 19 year-old SS out of high-school.
4. Richard Hilton, 18 year-old LHP out of high-school.
5. Paul Sims, 19 year-old RHP out of high-school.
6. Bill Pierce, 19 year-old RF out of high-school.
7. Eddie Ménard, 22 year-old CF out of college.
8. Mark Edwards, 22 year-old C out of college.
9. Arthur Jones, 22 year-old RHP out of college.
10. Richard Allen, 19 year-old SS out of high-school.
