Whales Fell Turbeaus, 5-4
|
The Virginia Beach Whales knocked off the Gulf Coast Turbeaus, 5-4, at Virginia Beach Grounds. Iván Vega was a big reason Virginia Beach won. The third baseman went 2 for 4 with a home run, a triple, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Bill Turner was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 2 of 2 save opportunities. Virginia Beach is now 39-35.
Had Yosai Hayagawa not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Hayagawa hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Whales.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Gulf Coast manager León Domínguez. "But we decided not to take it."
