The Virginia Beach Whales topped the Squirrel Hill Pierogis, 6-3, in USPL Double A action at Field of the Rawhides. The standout performance belonged to Virginia Beach pitcher and Villa Altagracia, Dominican Republic, native José Hernández. Hernández, the winner, moves to 4-6. He threw 5.1 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 8 and giving up 3 walks. Carlos Martínez nailed down his 7th save.

With two out in the top of the third, Chris Thompson barreled up a fastball from Mané Garrincha. The result was a 3-run home run, putting the Whales in front, 6-0.

Thompson told the Virginia Beach Citizen: "I don't know which I enjoy more -- being a ballplayer or the perks that come with being a ballplayer."

After today's action, Virginia Beach sits at 38-34; Squirrel Hill slips to 25-47.
