Whales Edge Past Guinea Pigs, 3-2
|
The Virginia Beach Whales had to overcome a fine performance from Gwinnett pitcher Albert Surtees to grab a 3-2 win at Experimental Stadium. Surtees allowed 1 run over 5.2 innings. The winner in relief was Gavriil Wolfson. He is now 1-0. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2.1 innings. Earning his 3rd save of the year was Carlos Martínez.
Virginia Beach used the clutch hitting of Calvin Chappell to snag the win. The designated hitter drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Whales ahead, 3-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.
"I felt good up there," said Chappell. "I saw the ball well."
The win gives Virginia Beach a season record of 19-18.
