San Mateo Dirty Reds manager Dean Ashley knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 24-year-old left-hander Sylvain Richard silenced the host Panama City Piranhas at The Tank today. The Dirty Reds shut out the Piranhas by a final score of 10-0, to give the Dirty Reds a - advantage in the best-of- Silver League Championship.

Richard earned the win, going 7.1 strong innings for San Mateo. The left-hander allowed just 2 hits, while striking out 7. Panama City hitters had little success against him.

"Sylvain's tempo and rhythm were good," said Dirty Reds manager Dean Ashley. "He was the key to us winning."
