The Virginia Beach Whales launched their 2039 campaign with a victory over the Durham Rapiers at Virginia Beach Grounds. Virginia Beach catcher Xavier Mercier was instrumental in the 9-8 win. He went 3-4 with 2 home runs and a walk, while scoring 4 times and driving in 2. Virginia Beach reliever Kenneth Ferrell picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Curt Moore absorbed the loss.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Virginia Beach shortstop Scott French, facing Curt Moore, had a run-scoring hit-by-pitch. It gave the Whales the 9-8 win.

"Good to get a win," said Mercier, "but it's a long season."
