Big Day by Varela Ignites Screaming Eagles Win
|
Mercer Island and San Bernardino duked it out at Field of the Grasshoppers and the Screaming Eagles came out victorious.
The Mercer Island Screaming Eagles beat the San Bernardino Grasshoppers, 5-2, at Field of the Grasshoppers. Mercer Island designated hitter Ricardo Varela earned player of the game honors with an outstanding performance. He was 4-4 with a home run, a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Diego Cartaya was the winner. Over 7.1 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts. Raimo Kangas was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 2 of 2 save opportunities.
With Mercer Island leading 1-0 in the top of the first, Varela hit a fastball from Michael Leonard for a 2-run home run. It was his 8th home run of the season and put the Screaming Eagles ahead, 3-0.
"I feel honored to be a part of this team," said Varela.
Mercer Island, at 52-30, sits in first place in the Premier AA.
