Stingers Lose to Evergreens, 5-1
|
The Portland Evergreens racked up a win at Evergreen Park, bumping off the Toledo Stingers, 5-1. Roberto Calderón, who started for Portland, pitched effectively for his team. Calderón picked up the win for Portland, going 7.2 innings. He gave up 1 run on 8 hits. He now sports a record of 14-0. The save was credited to Shinzo Kumagai, his 11th.
The Evergreens got a lift from left fielder Shahid Afridi who had a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the third inning off Rob Silva. It was his 57th RBI of the season and put Portland in front, 1-0.
"That's the key at this level, throwing strike one," said Calderón. "Successful pitchers do it."
Portland is now 75-23, 8 games up in the Third League.
