Riding the 2-hit performance of the 26-year old right fielder Philip Strickland, the Myrtle Beach Mermen stymied the Ft. Polk South Thunder Hawks, 7-0. David Gómez picked up the win with 7.1 innings of work. He allowed no earned runs on 7 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 3. On the season, he is now 3-0. The Mermen go to 36-24, putting them second in the Menard's AA.
Strickland came through with some timely hitting for Myrtle Beach. With the score 2-0 in the top of the third and two down, Strickland hit a 1-2 forkball for a 2-run home run. It was his 5th home run of the season -- and a big reason the Mermen managed to win.
"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling pretty confident after that win," said Strickland.
