Continentals Go Down to Defeat, 7-4
|
The Bethesda Atoms beat the Chesapeake Continentals, 7-4, at Chesapeake Grounds. The Atoms got a fine performance from center fielder Dave Smerdon, who captured player of the game honors. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times. Yajirobei Otomo finished to wrap up his 4th save. With the win, Bethesda boosts its record to 4-5.
A key at-bat in the game came in the top of the first inning when the Atoms sent teenager José Leyva to the plate against Continentals hurler Francisco Sandoval. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and a whole stadium watching, the kid controlled his nerves and delivered huge, hitting a single off a 3-1 cutter to score 2.
"It's nice to come out on top today," said Smerdon.
