Today is the first day of the free agency period.
With the arrival of free agency comes the opportunity for each club across United States Premier League to propel themselves into the playoffs simply by making a few shrewd, well-calculated signings. General managers have to choose wisely where to spend their dollars. An expensive signing could be the key to a playoff spot or it could handcuff a franchise for years to come.
This year's key free agents include:
1. Fernando Delgado, 33 year-old center fielder
2. Kurt Chappell, 27 year-old third baseman
3. Gil Jenkins, 32 year-old catcher
4. Matt Morris, 36 year-old catcher
5. Phil Johnston, 27 year-old second baseman

The PL salary arbitration hearings will be held today. For a few fleeting hours, general managers, players and their mouthpieces will conduct a risky game of verbal tug-of-war. Players, used to settling their scores on the field, could make millions or find their paychecks slashed summarily. When the decisions are announced tomorrow, general managers will have a much better grasp of their budget in the upcoming free agent market. One thing is for certain -- when the results go public tomorrow, someone in United States Premier League won't be happy.
