Stars Clip Panthers in Tight Contest

The Springfield Stars did just enough to sneak past the Vista Panthers, 5-4, at Kekambas Park. Springfield shortstop Shane Hutchinson earned player of the game honors. José Valdéz was called on to finish, recording his 11th save. The win was the 21st in 26 games this season for the Stars, who appear to be on course for a return trip to the playoffs.
Had Elliott Newell not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Newell hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Stars.
"It feels good to get that win," said Hutchinson. "Now it's on to the next one."
