Bob Smith knocked in all 3 runs for the Plymouth Rocks, helping them beat the Springfield Stars, 3-2. Walt Burton was the winner. Over 7 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, with 3 walks and 1 strikeout. The first-place Rocks have their sights set on making a deep playoff run.
The outcome might have been different had it not been for Smith. In the top of the seventh inning, when the Rocks were trailing 2-1, Smith delivered a two-out 2-run home run for Plymouth, giving his team the lead.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Plymouth manager Jaime Torres said.
