The Springfield Stars put one in the win column with an opening day 8-2 triumph over the Austin River Sharks. The crowd at Kekambas Park watched Shane Hutchinson put on a fine performance, for which he was named player of the game. Springfield starter José López was credited with the win after throwing 93 pitches over 9 innings. His record now stands at 1-0.

The game turned with no one out in the bottom of the fourth when Hutchinson, the first overall pick in the 2023 draft, hit a 3-run home run. It propelled the Stars into the lead, 4-1.

"It feels good to get this one," Hutchinson told the Springfield Times.
