Blaze Get One-Run Win at Caldwell
|
Fans watched the South Beach Blaze and the Caldwell Chiefs fight to the finish.
South Beach designated hitter Koen Weegerink had 3 ribbies while helping his team defeat the Caldwell Chiefs, 7-6. Ben Huber earned the win after being called from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 3.2 innings. He upped his record to 1-0. Ismael Bermúdez got credit for the save for South Beach. It was his 2nd of the year.
Weegerink contributed a big hit, a 3-run home run, for South Beach in the top of the third. With his team trailing 4-3, Weegerink took a fastball from Raymond Reeves and stroked the home run to left-center. His 1st home run of the season allowed the Blaze to leap in front, 6-4.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Caldwell manager Dan Fletcher. "But we decided not to take it."
The Blaze are off to an underwhelming start as they look to defend their championship, notching only their 7th win in 16 games.
