The Asheville Highlanders weathered a fine game by Providence left fielder Carlton Terry to upend the Pilgrims, 6-5, at Asheville Park. Terry was 2-4 with 2 singles and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Reliever Rick Behan picked up the win. His record improves to 3-2. Donald Stevens took the loss. The Highlanders are now 38-46, while the Pilgrims fall to 34-50.
Had Wen Pai not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Pai hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Highlanders.
"As well as we've been playing, I think we can play even better," said Asheville manager Pancho Campos.
