The Squirrel Hill Pierogis got a stellar performance from pitcher John Pope, who handcuffed the St. Petersburg offense en route to a win, 7-0, at Baby Thunder Dome. Pope went 7 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 2, and struck out 8. His record improves to 1-5. The loss makes St. Petersburg 19-19.
Squirrel Hill used a well-timed hit by Héctor Ortíz to capture the win. The shortstop socked a 2-run double in the top of the second inning to put the Pierogis ahead, 3-0. Though it was his only hit in 2 at-bats, it was important.
"We need to string a few more wins like this one together," said Pope.
