Smith Leads Rainbow Mermaids to Win
|
Lance Smith impressed in the 9-6 Northern Virginia win over Dayton. Smith was 2-2 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. The winning pitcher was Duke Silver. He's now 1-0. He went 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits for the Rainbow Mermaids. Horace Cope recorded his 23rd save for Northern Virginia.
Tied up with the Dirty Reds in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Rainbow Mermaids got a boost from center fielder Israel Cruz. With the bases loaded, Cruz saw a full count fastball from Victor Jones and hit a run-scoring single to break the stalemate and put Northern Virginia on top, 5-4.
"Every win gets us closer to our ultimate goal," said Smith.
The Rainbow Mermaids now have a record of 65-22.
