U-24 Cervantes Fires No-Hitter
|
Athletic Club KC U-24 starter Cisco Cervantes said he was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew: He was one out from a no-hitter. For a couple of seconds, he didn't move.
"I took a breath and told myself 'This is the last one,'" Cervantes recalled.
The left-hander collected himself, got the final out, and finished one of the greatest performances of his career.
The Athletic Club KC left-hander no-hit the Walla Walla Walleye 5-0 at ACKC Youth Field, finishing with 3 walks and 12 strikeouts, facing only 30 batters.
"I knew for a while it was a no-hitter," Cervantes admitted later. "But I really didn't worry about it until the last out. I thought I just wanted to win the game, and then I realized I wanted the no-hitter, too."
This season Cervantes has nailed down 1 save with 121 strikeouts in 85.2 innings. He is credited with 8 wins and 2 losses and has a 2.73 earned run average.
