Highlanders Walk It Off for 33rd Win of Season
|
The Asheville Highlanders weathered a fine game by Mercer Island left fielder Esteban Mejía to upend the Screaming Eagles, 7-6, at Asheville Park. Mejía hit 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. At 33-45, Asheville is in 7th place in the Premier AA.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Asheville center fielder Paul Young, facing Jerry Gordon, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Highlanders the 7-6 win.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Mercer Island manager Ricardo Vargas. "But we decided not to take it."
