|
The Gwinnett Guinea Pigs withstood an impressive performance by Casper second baseman Ken Payton to defeat the Ghosts, 8-4, at Experimental Stadium. Payton went 2 for 2 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI. Ken O'Neal, the winning pitcher, improved to 5-9. He pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 4 and walking 3. The 11th-place Guinea Pigs lifted their record to 37-49.
The game hit a turning point in the bottom of the third inning, when the Guinea Pigs were trailing 1-0. Manuel Gómez delivered a two-out 2-run home run for Gwinnett, catapulting his team into the lead.
"The boys were really swinging the bats today," winning manager Pedro Vázquez said.
