Whales Take Down Rails, 5-4
|
Fernando Tabárez impressed in the 5-4 Virginia Beach win over Richland. Tabárez, who is tied for 9th in the 3AA in bases on balls with 10, went 2-2 with 2 singles and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs. Carlos Mejía, now 2-0, was credited with the win. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 1 and walking 0. Éric Lemaire got the save, the 5th for him this season.
The game was at a stalemate until pinch hitter Paul Wallace came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Richland pitcher Elroy Mastenbroek, he hit a 1-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Virginia Beach on top, 4-3.
"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Virginia Beach manager Marv Bradford.
The Rails fall to 6-13 and continue their unimpressive start to the 2055 season.
