The Flint Crush inaugurated the 2054 campaign with a disappointing 9-6 loss to the Ellesmere Island Snowpeople at Flint Park. Ellesmere Island third baseman José Díaz had a big impact on the outcome. He went 4-5 with 2 home runs and 2 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 4. Phil Drew got the win, improving to 1-0. He worked 6.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 4. Earning his 1st save for Ellesmere Island was Júlio Nieto.

Díaz contributed a big hit, a 3-run home run, for Ellesmere Island in the top of the fifth. With his team trailing 4-3, Díaz took a slider from Lonnie Burton and stroked the home run to left. His 2nd home run of the season allowed the Snowpeople to leap in front, 6-4.

"We were the better team today. Maybe that won't be the case next game, but we'll enjoy it for now," Díaz told the Ellesmere Island Daily News.
