Columbia got a first-rate effort from pitcher Barry Newman, who frustrated Grim hitters en route to a 3-1 River Rats triumph at Columbia Stadium. The River Rats, at 40-50, sit in 7th place in the Premier A.

The game was on the line with two out in the top of the eighth inning, but Werner Payne didn't flinch. With a runner on 1st and Grim trailing 2-1, Payne retired Rob Jackson to end the threat. "Nothing to it," said Payne, with a wink.
