River Rats Turn Back Seahawks, 1-0
|
The River Rats faced a stiff challenge from Myrtle Beach pitcher Kel Ellis, but persevered to claim a win at Columbia Stadium. The final score was 1-0. Ellis went 7.2 innings and allowed 1 run. Columbia starter Barry Newman was credited with the win after throwing 94 pitches over 6 innings. His record now stands at 4-3. The River Rats now have a record of 30-36 with the win over Myrtle Beach.
In the bottom of the first, Dave Austin delivered a clutch hit. With two gone and the bases empty, the Columbia first baseman hit a solo home run, putting the River Rats in front, 1-0.
"It's always a heck of a lot easier to get to sleep after a win," Austin told the Columbia Times. "I know I'll rest easy tonight."
