The 2054 season did not get off to quite the start the Eugene Vandals had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Delmarva Gallos at The Riot Zone. The final score was 6-2. Starting Pitcher Jesús Sánchez was the top performer for Delmarva. Sánchez went 6.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 5 hits, walked 1, and struck out 10. His record improves to 1-0.

The Eugene Vandals had some chances. With Eugene trailing 6-0 in the bottom of the 7th, Raúl Guerrero hit a 2-run single. But it was too little too late for the Vandals. Eugene manager José Cervantes said afterward that his team would learn from this latest defeat.
