Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Thunder
|
The St. Petersburg Thunder had to overcome a fine effort from Mercer Island pitcher José Zamora to grab a narrow 4-3 win at Mercer Island Grounds. Zamora went 6 innings and allowed 1 run. St. Petersburg reliever Lee Fortescue picked up the win, upping his record to 3-2. Jeff Cook was saddled with the loss. The Thunder raised their record to 30-57.
St. Petersburg used a clutch hit from Manuel Licalde to get the win. The shortstop drilled a 3-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Thunder ahead, 4-1. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a doozy.
Licalde told the St. Petersburg Gazette: "I was born for the big stage."
