River Rats Sneak By Hawks, 6-5
|
Laredo got a terrific performance from pitcher Michael Wright, but it wasn't enough to beat the Columbia River Rats. Columbia won the Hawks Field contest, 6-5. Wright threw 7.0 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. Werner Payne, credited with the win, is now 2-1. He allowed no runs on 1 hit. Rob Sawyer, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 9th save.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder José Estevo came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Laredo pitcher Rusty Russell, he hit a 1-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Columbia on top, 6-5.
"It wasn't our best performance," said Estevo, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
The 7th-place River Rats sport a record of 20-25.
