In a low-scoring affair between the South Beach Blaze and the Smoky Mountain Hobeaus, pitcher Jerry Gordon was the difference between victory and defeat. The South Beach right-hander earned accolades in the 3-1 Blaze win. In 5 innings, Gordon surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. Juan Carrillo picked up the save for South Beach, his 2nd of the year.
Sam Stewart went 1 for 3 with a double for South Beach. The 21-year old right fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the second. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Seppo Seppänen. It was his 11th RBI of the season.
"I tried to mix it up, keep them off balance," said Gordon.
The Hobeaus, now 2-11, continue their poor start.
