Both teams had their chances, but the Eugene Vandals eventually prevailed.

Eugene beat Kennesaw on the strength of starter Curt Whitley's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 4-3. Whitley picked up the win for Eugene, going 7 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 1-1.

Eugene got the win thanks to a clutch hit from Júlio Ortega. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Vandals ahead, 4-3. Though it was his only hit in 1 at-bat, it had a major impact on the outcome.

"Getting ahead of the hitters was the key," said Whitley.

The Vandals, now 2-9, have not found much traction so far in 2053.
