Polar Bears Win at Virginia Beach, 5-4
|
The Virginia Beach Whales got a sterling performance from pitcher Lonnie Slaughter, but the Billings Polar Bears still prevailed, 5-4. Slaughter threw 5.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The win belongs to Ramón Gómez in relief. His record improves to 10-2. Marcel Traas took the loss for Virginia Beach. Nelson Shaffer got the save, the 5th for him this season.
Jason Johnson, the 24-year old first baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Johnson contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the sixth inning to put Billings up, 5-3.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Billings manager Steve Ferguson. "It's usually not just one thing."
The 4th-place Polar Bears have won 4 straight games.
