The Baton Rouge Brass inaugurated the 2053 campaign with a disappointing 9-7 loss to the Hialeah Dodos at Brass Field. Hialeah right fielder Gavrie Germashev had a big impact on the outcome. He was 2 for 6 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Hialeah reliever Dan Carter picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Ron Ward absorbed the loss.

Germashev had a game-changing home run in the top of the 11th. On a 1-1 fastball from Ron Ward, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Dodos a 9-7 lead. It was the 2nd home run of the year for Germashev.

"I like winning," Germashev told the Hialeah Daily. "I may joke around, but when it comes down to it, winning is the most important thing."
