A good performance from designated hitter Sam Stewart helped the South Beach Blaze defeat the Delmarva Gallos, 5-4. Stewart was 2-3 with a home run, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for the Blaze. South Beach reliever Aaron Ellicott picked up the win to move to 1-0. Reggie Schalk suffered the loss. The first-place Blaze, at 62-30, now lead their division by 6 games.

A critical at-bat came in the top of the seventh inning when the Blaze sent 20-year-old third baseman Gonzalo Zarauza to the plate with the bases loaded. The youngster shook off the pressure and drew a walk, driving in 1 run, to put South Beach on top, 5-4.

"This isn't football or hockey where you can overwhelm your opponents," Zarauza told the South Beach Times. "Everyone gets 27 outs and we happened to make the most of them."
