Thunder Score Late, Top Blues, 3-2
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Baby Thunder Dome, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2052 USSL Double A season. On the mound was Pleun Wolf for the visiting Barton Springs Blues and Randy Crane for the hometown St. Petersburg Thunder. In a spirited contest, the Thunder pulled out the win, defeating the Blues by the score of 3-2. Especially impressive was Pleun Wolf. The win was credited to Mathew Ferguson in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Joe Anthony took the loss. Michael Pace earned the save for St. Petersburg, his 1st of the year.
Had César Alaniz not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Alaniz hit a bases-clearing double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Thunder.
"We faced good pitching and still got it done," said Alaniz.
