In a low-scoring clash between Yakima and Nuevo Mexico, pitcher Kevin Thornton was a difference-maker. The right-hander earned accolades in the 3-1 win. In 5.2 innings, Thornton surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 4. He allowed no runs. Thomas Brown notched his 13th save in 14 chances.
Yakima used a well-timed hit by Gustavo Alicea to capture the win. The first baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Hops ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Yakima manager Markus Richardson said.
The 6th-place Hops improved to 37-41.
