Octávio Cruz left his imprint on the 6-4 Detroit win against the Thunder Bay Northern Lions BC. Cruz, who finished 4th in the 3L in triples with 7 last year, went 2 for 4 with a home run, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Detroit reliever Manny Negrete picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Dan Taylor absorbed the loss. Jim Hicks earned the save for Detroit, his 21st.

The game was at a stalemate until catcher Pedro Costa came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Thunder Bay pitcher Dan Taylor, he hit a 1-0 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Detroit on top, 5-4.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Cruz.
