The South Beach Blaze put one in the win column with an opening day 1-0 triumph over the Matlacha Manatees. The crowd at The Ballpark on the Beach watched Francisco Encarnación put on a fine performance. Fred Koch came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. His record now stands at 1-0.

Koji Sugisata was the walk-off hero for South Beach. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Blaze first baseman hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"We'll kick back tonight and enjoy this win," said Sugisata.
