Minnesota Loons starter Alberto Nieves was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Providence Pilgrims, 4-3. Nieves, the winner, moves to 8-4. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 6 and giving up no walks. The Loons saw their win-loss record go to 39-42. At the same time, the Pilgrims fell to 43-38.

Minnesota used the timely hitting of Manuel Ortíz to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Loons on top, 4-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"I'm trying to keep it simple," said Nieves. "Just do my job."
