The Mercer Island Screaming Eagles took Bethesda pitcher Carlos Gómez's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Atoms Field. The final score had Mercer Island getting past the Atoms, 6-2. Gómez went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 4. Mercer Island reliever José Zamora was the winner. His record is now 2-0. The losing pitcher was Eddy Geels.

The result might have been different for Mercer Island, had it not been for Pepe Melandri, the 26-year old second baseman . Melandri stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put Mercer Island up, 3-2. For the game, he had 1 double and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"I just tried to make good contact," said Melandri.
