Athletic Club KC manager Andy Mayfield knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 23-year-old right-hander Bobby Bowles silenced the host Hollywood Shredders at The Hollywood Bowl today. The Athletic Club KC shut out the Shredders by a final score of 1-0, to give the Athletic Club KC a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-7 Tournament of Champions.

Elias den Blick, the 31-year old third baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. den Blick contributed a solo home run in the top of the third inning to put Athletic Club KC up, 1-0.

"Runs were at a premium," said Athletic Club KC manager Andy Mayfield.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at The Hollywood Bowl in West Hollywood.
