Wes Johnston and the Monongahela Monsters opened the SL AAA Championship in brilliant fashion today, traveling to Syracuse and shutting out the host Starks at Stark Stadium 2-0 to secure an important 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series. Johnston, the Monsters left-hander, threw 8.0 innings of shutout ball.

In his 89-pitch effort, Johnston allowed no runs on 2 hits over 8 innings. He walked 2 and struck out 2.

"Wes did a tremendous job," said Monongahela manager Sancho Tornero.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Stark Stadium in Syracuse.
