Getting a good performance from designated hitter Manuel Ortíz, the Ogallala Octopi defeated the Beaumont Crossbeaus, 8-5. Ortíz was 2-4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Octopi. Ogallala reliever Marcus Nielsen was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was José Lucero. Doug Owen was called on to finish, recording his 3rd save.

Ortíz contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Ogallala in the bottom of the first. With his team trailing 1-0, Ortíz took a curveball from Ricardo Romo and stroked the home run to right-center. His 5th home run of the season allowed the Octopi to leap in front, 2-1.

"I felt good up there," said Ortíz. "I saw the ball well."

The Crossbeaus, now 7-12, continue their inauspicious start.
