The Virginia Beach Whales withstood an impressive performance by Nuevo Mexico designated hitter Terry Baker to defeat the Mariachis, 5-3, at Mariachi Band Shell. Baker went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. The 8th-place Whales have won 4 straight.

The Whales got a big hit from second baseman Lee Montgomery. In the top of the sixth, Montgomery pounded a 2-run home run to right. His 6th home run of the season put the Whales ahead, 5-0.

"We'll keep playing hard and let the chips fall where they may," said Virginia Beach manager Domingo García.
