The Syracuse Starks overcame a good performance by Port Huron first baseman Tom Gray to knock off Port Huron, 8-6, at Stark Stadium. Gray went 2-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Hank Garrett, the winner, goes to 1-0. He allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, with 5 walks and 7 strikeouts over 5 innings. Hendrikjan Zweers, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 5th save.
José Villa took Steve Sanford deep in the bottom of the second. His grand slam home run put the Starks on top, 6-3. In all, Villa had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 5.
"I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Villa.
Syracuse, now 9-5, has played well in the early going.
