Wright, Pilgrims Beat Blimps, 4-3
|
The Providence Pilgrims put the giddy home crowd in an even more jubilant mood after beating the Akron Blimps in the season opener at Field of Plenty. Right Fielder David Wright won plaudits for Providence. He was 3-4 with a home run and 2 triples. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. The winning pitcher was Lando de Ruijter. He's now 1-0. He went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits for the Pilgrims.
Wright had a timely hit for Providence in the bottom of the eighth. With Akron trailing 3-1, he turned a 2-0 fastball into a 3-run home run. It was his 1st home run of the season, making it 4-3, Providence.
"Good to get a win," said Wright, "but it's a long season."
