No-Hitter for Dickerson
Thursday, September 5th , 2047
Seattle Rocketeers starter Virgil Dickerson said he was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew: He was one out from a no-hitter. For a couple of seconds, he didn't move.
"I took a breath and told myself 'This is the last one,'" Dickerson recalled.
The left-hander collected himself, got the final out, and finished one of the greatest performances of his career.
The Seattle left-hander no-hit the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids 5-0 at Boeing Dome, finishing with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts, facing only 31 batters.
"I knew for a while it was a no-hitter," Dickerson admitted later. "But I really didn't worry about it until the last out. I thought I just wanted to win the game, and then I realized I wanted the no-hitter, too."
So far this year Dickerson has made 20 starts, tossed 116.2 innings, struck out 75 batters and walked 36. His record is 5-10 with a 4.71 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .281 batting average.
