The 8-4 Virginia Beach win over Squirrel Hill was due in large part to Rick McCarthy. The Whales second baseman went 2-4 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. William Gordon picked up the win, improving his season record to 8-4. He struck out 5 in 6 innings. The 4th-place Whales have won 4 straight.

With Virginia Beach leading 4-3 in the bottom of the first, McCarthy hit a sinker from Bhunandana Lecamwasam for a 3-run home run. It was his 16th home run of the season and put the Whales ahead, 7-3.

"We came out aggressive," said Whales manager Domingo García. "We came out swinging the bats."
