Virginia Beach and Marquette played a hard-fought contest.

Virginia Beach Whales starter Hyung-gook Chong was in a rhythm all game. He led his team to a win over the Marquette Miners, 3-1. Bill Gould earned his 18th save in 22 chances.

Virginia Beach used a well-timed hit by Scott Beavis to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the first inning to put the Whales ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.

"I like what I saw today," said Virginia Beach manager Domingo García, "and I can't wait to get back out there and do it again."

The win elevated the Whales to 47-42.
