Whales Defeat Polar Bears, 2-1
|
The Virginia Beach Whales topped the Billings Polar Bears, 2-1, with second baseman Rick McCarthy playing a big role. McCarthy went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Whales in the win. Bill Gould got credit for the win, improving to 1-5. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. The triumph puts Virginia Beach at 28-22 for the season.
The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the tenth. With no one out, McCarthy hit a cutter from Edward Pritchard for a solo home run. The Whales, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said McCarthy. "And not try to do too much."
