Virginia Beach designated hitter Walt Reed had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Reed was 1-3 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 2, even as Squirrel Hill beat the Whales, 7-6. Their 16-29 record puts the Pierogis last in the Silver AA.

Squirrel Hill won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning. With one out and Bill Gould on the mound for Virginia Beach, catcher Nicolae Ispas hit a dramatic solo home run, bringing Pierogis fans to their feet.

"Our team showed some gumption," said Ispas. "I like it."
